i've been looking into moving toward these from flash and HID based lighting, many people are it seems and getting good results.
current plans are for a unit bassed on 3x Cree MC-E Emitter (max output 650 Lm each) http://www.dotlight.de/products/en/LEDs/LED-High-Power/CREE-LEDs/Cree-Emitter-LEDs/Cree-MC-E-Emitter-white-max-650-Lumen.html
these are more efficient than P7's if run well and seem to give a good light - running system ether made driver module or ATMEL based homemade SMD board.
probably powered by Li-ion 18650 cell based power-pack like the sten.
being of an engineering background cassings will be milled out of Al with front window bolted to it and O-ring sealed.

some smiler units have been build by Rod on ukcaving http://ukcaving.com/board/index.php/topic,7784.0.html - i've not seem one in action UG yet but have quite high hopes for this as a lightweight lighting system for photography:angel:.

what are peoples thoughts ideas??

Surely worth doing I'd say. If it's for still photography then some of the usual considerations can be done away with.

With that sort of output the duration of shots will be around 4-8 seconds, so does that mean that heat sinking can be pretty much done away with?

Likewise runtime doesn't much come into it as even 200 shots of 4 seconds each isn't a lot.

Finally, I guess a good sturdy case would be nice, but it could just be carried in a decent waterproof box. Will be keen to see what you come up with. I'd be keen to try it myself, but unfortunately even just thinking about electricity makes my brain dissolve.

Good luck with that. I have seen those emitters in action and they are pretty good. I am actually going back to using flash myself though. Love to see how your project turns out 🙂

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
