One for the Nikon 8400 users...

I managed to pick a spare one up on eBay cheaply enough to justify paying the postage from Australia, and it came with a home made adapter to fit a 49mm filter:

With a clear filter in place of the polarizing filter this doubles up as a very effective lens hood. Doesn't seem to affect the photographs at all and completely prevents crud getting carried into the camera as the lens extends and retracts

Having used this last weekend it really is a great idea. If you've got some metal pipe kicking around, a means of making the thread and a knurling tool it's a great way of stopping gunk getting in the camera via the lens.
