I don't know if anyone else has seen these wonderful bits of kit, but I'm amazed by them. Nickle metal hydride AA batery with a capacity of 3.2Ah!! I'v just bought 8 for use in a Vivitar digi compact (£49 at Asda v v good) and they out perform a Duracell by at least twice. Made in Germany by PROFiTEXX-that is the way it's spelled on the cell-their website is www.PROFFiTEXX.de and they have the UK agents contact details on the site. I got mine on ebay from the same distributor and paid £11 all in delivered next day!
Amazed at the capacity of the AA's I browsed their site and discovered that their 'D'cells are rated at 11Ah EACH!! Dont put one in your pocket with your loose change!
I see endless possibilities for more compact lighting and, with Cree led's, extended service with smaller battery packs.
I'm sure I saw a 3.8Ah one advertised somewhere but cant think where.

I have some Energiser 2.6ah AA's. They came with 1 hour charger for £14.99 from Robert Dyas. (Ironmonger chain based in the south)
I also have loads of 2ah AA from Energiser. £4.99 for 4.
I have seen 3.4ah batteries for £9.99 for 4. I think at Maplins.

I always found with Ni-mh batteries to buy one down from the current max capacity; the price differential between that and the largest never seemed to be worth it.

On a different note, I came to charge some AA Ni-mh batteries I've not used for a while and found they wouldn't take a charge. My charger will rapid charge, soft charge and condition charge, but registered the batteries as fully charged when in fact they were totally flat, and they just sat there and heated up... Any ideas or are they past it?

It might be to do with the quality of them, (watch it, you will blow me out by telling me that they are a good brand). I have played with Chinese brands in the past and they tend to do this.

One thing you could try is to put a heavy load on them, don't short them, and run them completely down. Then try charging them again, on a slow charge if you can. Repeat a few times.

I have some Saft (expensive industrial make) NiMH any they are now about 5 years old, had lots of abuse, not touched for a year at one point, no problems.

When ever you do charge your batteries whether it be Li-Ion or NiMH, if you can afford the time, charge them always on the slowest charge (ideally Capacity / 10 for NiMH) as this really prolongs life. Fast charging reduces life times.

Thanks Mike. I've not touched my Ni-mh batteries for ages . I only ever used them for my flash (which I rarely use) and the light cannon; which has since died - great piece of kit but perhaps gas discharge torches not best suited to being knocked around underground. Or maybe I'm just clumsy.

They were a mix of:

1) Some wierd brand sold in Aldi - used once, left for a month or so and never worked again >:(

2) This batch that have refused to charge = Uniross

3) Some I've yet to test after a few months of disuse = Ansman

Hopefully the Ansman ones will work, I'll test them tomorrow. The Aldi own brand ones simply proving the old adage buy cheap buy twice which obviously applies to underground kit as well!

Sorry about the bum link, I guess this time I'll have to use my hands to type it out 😉
The ebay link is Budpack-Direct. I've just checked the online shop and they are offline until 9th June so going to their site at the moment is a waste of time. Lots of blank pages and no goods.
The PROFiTEXX website is mostly in German and the translations are hilarious but with a little persevering you can get the lowdown on most of their products. 🙂
