The polished ball in this picture came from the Wigwam quarry in West Quincy, Massachusetts. The quarry was originally owned by Soloman Willard who eventually sold it to The Badger Brothers company. The quarry eventually was sold to Jonathan Swingle, who was known as "The Extra Dark Man". This particular ball is extra dark Quincy granite and is located in the Chippiannock cemetary in Rock Island Illinois.

Mind you, at six tonnes, I doubt it would be easy to move.

Once it got rolling, though... 😮
Hello again darkness, my old friend...

Must be in a posh area for it not to have a face (& worse) permamently drawn upon it!

Anyone know how much it cost?

I would like to have seen the production process from a chunk of rough hewn stone.

At Carsington Water Reservoir's Visitor Centre (Derbyshire) there is a Kugel Ball, i.e. a 90 cm (3 ft) sphere of Bavarian granite revolving on a bed of water. It's fasinating to look at, but why a speciman of native British granite wasn't used I don't know!

Easy. To extract granite, you would find that your quarry had become an SSSI and a World Heritage Site, your buildings had become listed buildings so you couldn't use them any more, your access road had a 7.5tonne limit so the posh retired folk don't get their life disurbed by some work going on, a Conservation Area had sprung up nearby, the blasting noise had triggered a Noise Abatement Order, Health and Safety requirements mean that £2million of handling machinery is required because we can't lift more than 10kg without an exoskeleton.

You know, the usual obstacles to doing business.

Chris.

P.S. I wish I was joking.

The Quincy Quarry Museum site has some quite interesting historical photos.

And a little on the Granite Railway.

The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
