I fully agree ICLOK and this is the same argument I have with regards artefacts underground in mines. A gunpowder horn or a lantern underground is something worth visiting, exciting to find and useful in some cases as a navigational aid. The same item in a museum would just be a piece of rotten iron (if it survived the trip out to daylight).

Or in the case of one near here, out the front too! Also, the one loco they did "restore" was totally ruined by replacing all the steel sheet with brand new, thus destroying 80 odd years of quarry knocks and bangs that added character to it.

To me and many others one of the things enjoyed on a trip underground and on the surface is to see the metal relics.
Not far from the Penmaenmawr quarry at map ref 115/685698 there was a wreckage of a German Heinkel bomber which came down in 1941. Not a lot left now only some small bits of alloy.
But I would walk miles to see something like -

absolultely brilliant at where it is. 🙂
