I am popping over to the Isle of Man for a week and wondered if anyone knew of any mines that are;

1) Worth visiting
2) Can be done solo
3) Don't need permission or permission can easily be obtained at the drop of a hat

(all three need to apply because I may not get the chance)

I'm fairly sure that the Isle of Man has a quirkly law that makes entering disused mines illegal

Quite a lot of lead mines on the island but think you need some form of approval to enter them

Try contacting Pete Geddes Lacey Mines Research Group. There are lots of mine sites you can see on surface. Brands Head by Port Erin is a difficult scramble

It's worth a walk up the valley from Laxey as there are some surface remains and may be some holes... There are quite a few other surface remains of mines around the IOM worth looking at. I asked about mines access a few years (over 10!) on Mine Explorer and got a PM from someone on the IOM who said they had access near Laxey to big pitches to the main stopes. This was probably before any legislation - but who knows - I am sure if you can find the right people then there is still access, just don't have an accident 🙂. The TU group on ME was really useful for this sort of thing, shame it died. Given your profile maybe someone will PM you with details.

Looked into this myself a few years back and from what I could gather almost all the mines are gated and locked and access is rarely given, There is Snaefell Mine close to the Bungalow on the mountain, a small mine at Laxey that is open to the public for about 50 feet, and the Laxey mine which is a deep mine, there are sometimes trips down this mine but it is usually in conjunction with the local mine explorers to carry out inspections of the pump rods and pumps which are still located in the shaft below the balance bob pit.

There is a local mine or caving club the name of which I cannot remember and they were tasked with putting gates on most of the mines around 10 years ago.
