Last week I called in to have a look at the old tungsten mines at Borralhas in northern Portugal.

What a treat - open shafts and levels including a ginormous skip wound incline (open). Winders in place (except where the local apanhistas have burnt the expensive bits out). A complete mining village, all looking a bit sad.

Get there before they re-open the mine. They are drilling at the present.

Its not far from Porto and if any one needs more information (or more photos) don't hesitate to ask. What is unusual is that the winding house is directly on top of the incline shaft which is itself in the bottom of an openwork. The rope then goes right round the sheave and back down the shaft.
