Loads - check out:
Linares
La Union
Sierra Almagrera
Los Pedroches, (Cordoba)
Cuidad Real
Barruecopardo (Salamanca)

There may be some in the Asturias but I don't know that area.

I'm sure I saw some at Mina de Sao Domingo in Portugal but I can't remember now, it was 20 years ago and I can't be bothered to check through all my slides.

If you're going on holiday with someone and need to do a bit of non-mining sight-seeing, lazing on beaches, etc. Can I suggest flying out on a cheapy to Alicante, hiring a car and spending some time around the La Union/Portman area - over 1500 shafts, some with engine houses, flat rope winders, dressing plants, etc, etc all packed into a 5 square mile area.
There was a good museum in La Union too but I haven't been for quite a few years. It was advertised as being there when I went in February 2007, the last time I was there.

I'd say you don't need a guide to La Union, if you get there you can see nothing but mines. Check it out on Google Earth.
Most of them are easy to access. There are underground sites there too but don't mess with them unless there's a few of you.

2 of us descended one which consisted of a spiral staircase around the outside of a shaft (stones stuck out of the side) they stopped after 50 feet but the shaft kept on going - we didn't!

I've been looking at mines in Spain about 20 times but only in the south, west and east, never the centre and the north.

If you get bored with that a bit further to the south-west is Mazarron and then further on, the Sierra Almagrera which is like mining heaven.

I've never found any useful guides or truly useful websites. I started with a Michelin maps and worked from there.

Plenty of photos here...

Forgive me for asking, but when you say "collect", surely you don't actually bring them back with you?! 😮

Yes I do.... that's why they've virtually all gone in Derbyshire and surrounding counties, I pinch em and have a clearing in Sherwood forest with over 100 so far.... see grid ref xxxxx!!!!

Well you started it!

(Actually better not joke about it as will end up with everyone trying to find them like the so called reserve list of BR Steam engines that where hidden in tunnels!) ::)

Linares for engine houses - no doubt. More awkward to get to though.

Probably the one furthest away was discovered by accident as explained in an interesting article by Kenneth Brown 'The story of a New Zealand copper ming fiasco' in the Journal of the Trevithick Society. It was a 36" engine sent out to the Kawau mine, New Zealand, in 1854. The engine house is still there if you want to pop out and nick it. 😉

As I recall the road from La Union to Linares is none to clever - give yourself plenty of time. Its about a 5 hour drive and 400Km.

La Union is my idea of heaven. Make sure you have a look at Portman and its spectacular dressing plant (derelict) They dumped so much fine tailings in the sea that the entire bay filled up with it. The sea is now about 2 Km from the dock!

Nothing to do with mines but check out the gun batteries on top of the cliff near the lighthouse. Abandoned now but the underground magazines, etc are still in place.

I shall hopefully be out in Spain later this year, don't know which area yet.
