Good evening all. I'm on holiday in a few weeks time with few friends staying in in South Lanarkshire. We're hoping to get a bit of time underground whilst in the area. Unfortunatly we can't get the time to get up to the main caving area in the N.Scotland.

So the question is are there any suitable mine / underground venues fairly close from S.Lanarkshire? I'm aware of the Lead Mining region nearby if any of the mines are accessible?

Quick scan indicates there's not a lot around. Leadhills etc.. is no go. Gasswater Baryte level probably sounds the most promising.

You also have the silver mines at Cairnpapple and several limestone mines around that area and also near Milngavie and, a bit further north, around Cambusbarron. Also some small - scale copper mines in the Ochils, eg Blairlogie. If you want to cross the Forth there are some good limestone mines in Fife. You are correct about Leadhills being useless, for now. I don't know the details but there will inevitably be limestone workings in Ayrshire. There are a few lead, zinc or bares workings in the south west, down near Criffell if I remember correctly. And that is just for starters. Someone with a better memory will be along to tell you more, hopefully.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
