Hello,

I arrived back home from University last Friday night and was told that there had been a local TV news item earlier last week saying that Gold mining had re-started at Wanlockhead.

Does anyone have more details, such as if it's true, who's involved, which mine has been re-opened etc?

I understood that all the gold at Wanlockhead had come from alluvial deposits rather than out of the mines, and no-one had ever found gold in anything other than microscopic amounts in any of the veins around there. It could be someone's trying something a bit bigger than panning in the streams, or that someone's trying a few of the veins.

The only active prospecting for gold in Scotland that I am aware of is Scotgold (!) near Tyndrum.

It is of course nowhere near Wanlockhead.

The Annual Goldpanning Championships are on over this weekend at Wanlockhead
Gold is where you find it

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
