On the Welsh news yesterday it was mentioned that 100 jobs could be lost at Unity mine - Cwmgwrach. Just over 200 work there. It was stated that the problem was due to the slowness of obtaining planning permission:

The Unity Mine has the full support of the MP for Neath, Peter Hain. This champion of coal also supports the Severn Barrage beacuse 'it will help stop our reliance on fossil fuels'. Obviously he means fossil fuels from outside his constituency, the fossil fuels his would-be voters mine are just hunky dory.

The owners of Wales' largest mine are filing for administration, it has been confirmed.

The future of the Unity Mine, a drift mine near Neath, has been uncertain in recent months after management said they only had work for 66 of 220 staff.

Richard Nugent, director with Unity Mine Limited, said the company had been "forced into the process of filing for administration".

He added the workforce would be maintained until further notice.

So I went onto the BBC website today, and was struck by the proximity of the Unity Mine story, and this one:

which basically is the prevarication of public bodies preventing the expansion of East Pit.
Presumably East Pit will go the same way, not through lack of resource, but because of the bureaucratic burden of operating in the UK.

Chris.
