The BBC news web site seems to carry a fair bit of mining news at the moment. First coal in 10 years taken from Unity coal mine:

Looks like good news, although there seems to be a bug going round where mines are reopended but close again not long after.

Hopefully this one and other can last a bit longer

I went in a mine once.... it was dark and scary..... full of weirdos

Its a bit repetitive isn't it. Here's a quote:

Yes 1million tonnes/year is alot especially if it's a 'private mine' UK coals' largest producer Daw Mill does about 2.2million and Kellingley at about 2million.

1 million would put it up there with the North Notts Collieries

Out of curiosity, do you know what the total UK coal output is at the moment?

Total mined coal (opencast and deep) is 16millions tons/year (even split).
