Nice to see Red78's photos of Shaw Level with well-thought-out descriptions.

Many years ago I was told that the air in Shaw Level was particularly bad, to the extent that it would even extinguish a candle.

Anyone thinking about going underground here would be wise to either a) not, or b) properly monitor the air quality.

Anybody know different??

Er, no. Despite having parked and driven down that bit road however many times have somehow never got round to walking the few yards over to the level. :-[

There's a similar comment re. the air quality in the Arkengarthdale British Mining book.

Ditto, Rick. Wish I had a quid for every time I've driven over the Stang and made up my mind to go and have a prod at Shaw 'next time' ::)
