I recently came across an article about the two steam engines at Gwyn pit colliery, Pontypool in an old Industrial Archaeology Association journal. I couldn't find the mine on the database under either name, does anyone know if the engines are still rusting away on site or did the scrappers get them in the end?

Just checking. It's definately Gwyn not Glyn?

I see it had a Cornish Beam water pump.

My mistake - it is indeed Glyn pits. I recognise the beam engine from the photos in the article, which was done back in 1990. I also notice on checking that the site is scheduled, but as we all know that's no protection against neglect and vandalism.....

I've now done what I should have done in the first place and banged Glyn Pits into google - this brings up this: http://www.pontypoolglynpits.co.uk/index.htm

I'm glad to see that the site is bein looked after, one day they might even get these engines running again! I know that the canal pumping engine at Lea Wood near Cromford gets plenty of visitors on steaming days..... 🙂
