In the advertisements section of the North Wales Chronicle of Saturday, June 2, 1866 is an advertisement:

Quote:

TO PROPRIETORS OF SLATE QUARRIES, MINES, &c.

THE Advertiser, an Engineer of long and great experience in the Opening and Working of Slate Quarries in North Wales, is prepared to undertake the Engineering and Management of a Slate Quarry to be worked almost entirely by machinery, and of his own invention: it is very simple in construction, and will miake a saving of 25 per cent. in cost of labour. Address No. 80., Engineer, at the Office of the North Wales Chronicle.

Who might 'Engineer' have been?

From the date of the advertisement I guess it might have been James Hunter (of saw and tunneller fame), but I would be interested if anyone can suggest other possible candidates.

Possibly William Kellow, Moses father, the son's high opinion of himself way well have been inherited. The family moved from Cornwall to Wales. Moses was born in 1862 and they moved to Caernarfon when he was 3 years old so the timing is about right. The problem with Kellow is that his experience in North Wales at that time could hardly be called "long".

What's this thread, a game of Spot That Kellow

Adrian Barrel wrote in Appendix V The Kellow Family

"...Another Kellow is Joseph, the “Jos Kelley” mentioned in the 1873 Caernarvon and Denbigh Herald article as the manager of Parc. Presumably he was the same Joseph Kellow who wrote “The Slate Trade of North Wales”, published in 1868, in which he is described as a quarry engineer of 26 years practical experience.."

Spot the Kellow indeed!

My understanding is that William Kellow (Moses' father) was agent at Park Quarry (not Parc Mine) 1874–1892.

Joseph Kellow (Moses' uncle) was agent and quarry engineer at Conglog Quarry about 1870-72. (Conglog Slate Quarry, Celia Hancock & M.J.T. Lewis, 2006).

With regard to the "machinery ... of his own invention" statement in the original advertisement, I've not come across any patent applications in the name of Kellow other than those of Moses himself.

In addition to Moses either Joseph or William did patent some machinery - but I would need to dig it all lout again. Another possibility is E.J.J.Dixon who had been Manager at Gorseddau and patented numerous items.
