Right guys I have come up with an idea, however I thought I would put it out on here to see what you think after my last idea was shockingly bad

Last time I went (I think it was October) there was a ridiculous amount of boats left in various conditions. There must have been at least 7 or 8 in there plus some other litter.

Anyway my friend has a kayak he is willing to leave up there and I would like to tidy the place up a bit. I have suggested locking it up with a combination lock somewhere to stop the unprepared.

Your thoughts?

Lock up the kayak? Or lock up the mine?

I'm guessing you mean the flooded chamber to the right of the incline off that main adit, as boated so heroically by our cage fighting friends? And not the chamber of horrors on the CRTT.

Is a kayak a lot of use in there? A Canadian would be better? Take more that one person at a time?
But for your own personal use then yeah go for it!
Combination locks tend to rust up and jam quickly though, plenty of WD40 needed. Also there is always the chance that someone will nick it unfortunately :(

Yeah I was on about the chamber on the right of the incline. I think it's the west ones? I'm aware there is one on the last chamber of the CRTT however I think it has a hole in it.

My mate had the kayak out of the skip at his work but he assures me it floats :lol:

Perhaps it's an idea to deliberately sink the vessel after each use, weighing down with rock if necessary, with a very discreet small rusty chain attached somewhere to allow it's retrieval.

Try it out on a river closer to home before lugging it all the way up there :lol:

I'm in two minds on this generally....

On the one hand we see an awful lot of crap and tat left in mines from previous "projects" that never got off the ground or failed or ran out of steam or whatever.

On the other hand who are we to stop anyone having fun and trying new things. You and your kayak have as much right to be there as someone doing the CRTT or someone on a photography trip or someone studying industrial archeology or a 101 other things that people do in mines.

I guess the unwritten rule is if you take anything in somewhere then you should always be prepared to retrieve it and dispose of it properly if it doesn't work or if you lose interest :smartass:

The CoH boat was fine just before Christmas (?)

A closed cockpit grp/plastic kayak is not a great idea wearing the type o underground gear we use- layers, climbing helmet and wellies perhaps? Boat stability varies tremendously between them as well.

As Sinker mentions try it out on your local duck pond first. Experience the exhilaration of an inverted extraction with brain freeze and incremental panic setting in :lol:

A more charitable deed would be to take away the trash perhaps?

A good point. I have never actually been in a proper kayak, only an Inflatable. I will take a pump up and if there's a couple of decent ones they can stay up there the rest I will take down.

Theres a few interesting looking lakes up there bot above and underground.

There was a blue rope tied to the bridge support, we tried to get it out but could not get to it.

There must be a bunch tied to the end :lol:. I even made a hook out of some old wire and rope but it was just pulling the bridge support and I didn't want to be the one to send it to the bottom of the lake!

Maybe someone was using it as a diving line.

All kayaks should be sunk!! If you want to turn these beautiful historic mines into theme parks or boating lakes, bring your own and take them out (or sink them later out of sight). If you want to go through to Rhosydd, bring a rubber ring and hope you can swim ;):lol: As for rubbish, the amount of rubbish after your so called “chamber of horrors” is disgusting!! Ffss clean up gear after use. Old ropes everywhere :(:(>:(
