I have often wondered if the stripy vein between the back and old veins in Cwmorthin was named because of the presence of bands of striped "chert" as seen best in the opencast above Cwmorthin. I am certain i saw some of this material just above the nice curved portal to the level which enters the large stripy vein chamber on floor B. I am trying to find out a bit more about these chambers. This one seems quite wide for Cwmorthin, and doesn't drop to anywhere else. Memory fails me a bit on this , but I'm sure I saw a date from the 1930's on the wall and there is a lot of fall on the floor which is however easy to clamber over. Painting with light in this chamber reveals the wall the level breaks through to be very impressive, and the tunnel breaking into it very photogenic 🙂

The stripy rocks are tuff-turbidites from the Rhiw-bach Volcanic Formation - likely airfall tuffs (white), alternating with normal turbidite clastic sedimentation (dark grey). They are pretty much felsic in composition and must have been a ******* to dry-drill due to the kind of dust they would have generated.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
