I have been in contact with Raymond Gunn who issued the booklet - original sale price £6. He is sending me this on disc through the post and is happy that the contents be shared with others free of charge since he originally sold it at just above cost price and there is not a massive demand. He says its a large file so when I receive it I will reduce its size and upload it. Give me a week or so.

The file has now been uploaded. It is a big file but I was unable to reduce the size any further.

Firstly, a big thank you to JonK and Raymond for arranging for this this book to be public domain. Heck of a nice gesture by Raymond especially, it's actions like that which earn my respect, a far cry from the business ethics of our friend Tony the Forger.

I've heard numerous tales of woe regarding Tony since this thread. If you genuinely feel that you've been done over by him at some point in the past, please send me a PM.

Thanks all

Based on the correspondence I had with Ray Gunn last week he advised:-

" . . .when first published I was laser printing it with a comb binding and clear covers and selling it at cost at £6 a copy. Pictures use a lot of toner so even laser printing it was costly. I sold about 60 copies locally by word of mouth alone. Nobody gets rich writing local history but somebody has to do it"

About the quarry

I would have first visited it in the late 1980s, and few random memories.

I explored a 'crumbling' level on the other side with large chambers and bridges etc. A lower level was reopened for a time but I never entered it.

I remember a new compressor being purchased, the old one was put out with the problem apparent. No anti freeze had cracked the cylinder block.

I was always mooching about places and still am. I might have some photos from those days.

I have given this thread a good clean-up.

Just to reiterate, Tony Oldham has been banned from this site, if you have bought publications from him that later turned out to be photocopies I would suggest pursuing a claim direct with PayPal or eBay.

However I felt this thread was a serious distraction from the extreme generosity of Raymond Gunn in making the original document freely available for download.

You can download it directly from this link:

From the "documents" section in the top right.

If Ray wanted this printed professionally, I can probably oblige - at cost - and in modest numbers. It would be to the quality of the last edition of the Cwmorthin book. 🙂

Sounds a nice idea Peter; might be worth getting in touch with Jon Knowles who is in contact with Ray?

If JonK can pass this on, I would be much obliged. A download is fine, but a little book for sale at appropriate venues is often a winner. I am sure Mike would stock them as well.

I was intending to do this but wasn't sure of demand now its available on download?

I would also pay Ray a commission on each one sold - or payment to charity of his choice if he prefers.

Ray also published another book, about the village of Ceinws and Esgairgeiliog this included sections on the local slate quarries I believe. Might this be worth reprinting if Ray is interested?

Can't speak officially, but I am sure that the Corris Railway would be willing to sell some of the books in their shop if they were printed, also the new cafe at the Corris Institute.

EDIT.
Spoke to the person who deals with our Museum and he confirms that we would probably be willing to take some of the books if they are printed, depending obviously on price and what arrangements we could come to.
Please PM me if this happens.
