You might get more replies if you gave a brief precis of your article what it was about and what you are trying to say. :smartass:

What I and others are concerned about with this kind of enquirer is what the article is about and the politics involved.
Some of us have experience of being mis-quoted or taken out of context. :(

Manicminer, that is so true.

Although in reply to Owens post, we have many images from Gwynfynydd on here, just search 'Gwynfynydd' in the 'Search Mines' tab up the top right or click here:

Just make sure you have permission to use them before publishing. I know a few people on here make a living from Photography and wouldn't think twice about issuing a hefty invoice.

It's a newspaper that sells stories for money and they want the photos for free. How would the writer feel about doing the story for free..... "don't worry we shall credit it to you"....

It was more of a hint that they should seek permission from the photographer who can set a rate should they choose, rather than try the usual trick of pinching the photo and publishing it anyway pretending that it has no monetary value. A Number of national publications have tried this, and it's not uncommon that they are on the blunt end of an invoice far chunkier than it would have been had permission been sought, for unauthorised use.

These people in the papers know that they can snaffle pictures regardless. safe in the knowledge that by the time you have chased them around the houses to get an agreed payment amount and then invoiced them, completed the paperwork and then face the possible tax implications it just is not worth the hassle unless you are a pro photographer and it is paying your mortgage, It has happened to me on numerous occasions and they offer a credit at the very best but they will likely use them anyway with or without permission.
first question to ask owen is "what is your budget" brace yourself for the answer 🙂

If Owen's writing the story, there's likely to be a business element to it ;)

Payment? A tricky one.

The Daily Post isn't a national and I doubt it has any budget to pay for photographs to accompany a story that's not going to sell any more papers.

Local papers have taken a bashing from the internet and many are on the brink of folding. It's the way the world has gone.

There are also a lot of people who are willing to offer photographs for free, just for the credit - so there's no need for a lot of papers to pay.

That's just the way it is, like it or (more probably) not. A two page spread in a national, you've got a chance of payment. The Daily Post, not unless it's very newsworthy.

They've published two or three of my photos in the last month, for no payment and I can't say I'm fussed about it. (In neither case was I taking work from paid photographers).

No point in haranguing Owen - he's got a job to do and he's not got the budget to pay for photographs.

My only thought would be whether anyone wants to publicly put their name to a photograph taken inside a mine they weren't supposed to be in 😉

which leads to the mine in question. I feel uncomfortable.

I would rather give him an exclusive on Cwmystwyth or similar.

The more people that let them get away with it, the more they will do it. A few hefty invoices, and they'll stop soon enough. It doesn't matter if it's your main income or a hobby that pays for the odd beer.

So far there doesn't appear to be a planning application listed.

Isn't this some marketing ploy so that the company is associated with an actual mine? I thought Clogau the company isn't related to the actual mine? Or I may have got that wrong.

There is a pending 'lease option agreement' with Crown Estates for Gwynfynydd

'Clogau' the jewellery manufacturing company had Clogau mine in the 1990's and the Crown terminated their Lease. They have had nothing to do with that mine since.

They bought Gwynfynydd back in the summer of 2014 and they have applied for an Option from the Crown which has not yet been issued.

The signs at the hydro construction site by the old mill say "Clogau Renewable Energy Scheme". I spoke to a contractor working there, he reckons that the hydro scheme is to be worked in conjunction with environmental controls pending the opening of the mine. Make of this what you will!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
