I was given this bit of kit (Australian) and would like to know if any-one has any experience with it. At cavediggers site they have some information but does not answer if I can remove the extra braking system at the top, to use it as a single operated device and is it any good.

Looks like it could lead to no end of trouble!

Similar situation to the Anthron from what I hear....people who like them swear by them, people who don't like them just loathe them! The rest of us swear by Stops or Simples because they were the first thing we were ever given to use after an eight?

Red helmets are really good, but not sure about descenders.

I have a couple of mates who use them - they are superb, arguably the best bobbin descender around. They have the stop feature of the Petzl Stop without the jerky ride.

If you don't get on with it I would be happy to take it off your hands.

Wow over 60 minutes and no-one has yet commented that anyone who doesn't use a rack is some sort of sub-human.

Looks interesting, try it, if you like it us it.
That would be my advice.

I still say
If you are first down an unknown pitch, or exploring then a Stop has it's benefits.
For ALL else a rack (after practice) is a much better solution.

I find descending with a screwdriver to be much less prone to accidental injury than using a chisel.
Don't look so embarrassed, it's a family trait...

Depends on what you're doing; if you want to try and assemble flat-pack Ikea furniture using a chisel instead of a screwdriver could you video it and post it to Youtube for our entertainment?

If that's what I think it is, they are very highly rated in Alpine Caving Techniques, and quite expensive, as I remember.

I think it's upside-down to a Stop, in that the rope clamping is performed at the top bobbin as the rope exits, rather than the bottom bobbin. Also as its handle is much longer and better-shaped, it's way less painful to use.

Although I use a Stop, I hate its operation - a better-designed handle would be a help (why can't they do that?), but also would remove the danger of your fingers opening the catch plate as you squeeze the handle. Definitely a device in need of a redesign, IMO. I do appreciate the locking function, but try it on 9mm, and it doesn't work so well.

I dropped a massive shaft recently on brand-new 11mm Spanset bagged up beneath me, and I may as well have been on a rack, as there was no 'stop' at all. Mind you, it was one of the smoothest descents I've ever had.

The thing is with a stop, you're meant to squeeze the handle AND THEN use it like a bobbin. Not like an ID where the handle position equals speed. It's a mistake people often make and why they get a sore hand.

Absolutely spot on!

Marra, stick to what you know. Remember what happened when you experimented with two Petzl Stops!

I tried an Anthron a few years ago but I failed to descend due my meagre weight. Returned to supplier (ebay)

Anthron descenders are absolutely diabolical, wouldn't touch one with a barge pole.

Prefer an ID myself - so controllable.

btw ... what's arack... is that alcoholic beverage from the Levant. What do you do? Wrap the rope round the bottle?
