Hi all
I'm trying to plot the North Western ends of the Waenlas (continuation of Pant-du) & Waenlas Bach lead veins & locate the collapsed drainage adit into the River Alyn.

Chris Ebbs states (1) that several hundered meters of workings (Waenlas) are now accesible via a low drainge adit which opens into the River Alyn.

Coflein (2) also mentions the drainage level but for the Waenlas Back vein.

Any help appreciated.

The Coflein entry gives an unpublished Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust report as its source. To my experience, industrial entries in Coflein sometimes derive from poor quality secondary sources so, if a Coflein entry doesn't agree with good quality or primary sources, it may simply be that the source used by Coflein is wrong. It would be worth asking CPAT for sight of the relevant report which, if written to the usual standard, will be fully sourced and referenced, allowing you to chase the statements to their origins.

The Drainage level is a crawl from just inside the entrance for a good way. It is stone arched all the way until it opens out into a good size tunnel. The low section may have been cut and filled. It is to small to have been used for any haulage of minerals. At the enterance area there is no sighn of any spoil or building remains. The level bears right with two drivages going from it, The first heading towards the Waen Las Bach but not conected and the second into the Waen Las workings.
We managed to get into the Waen Las Bach workings up in the Big Covert in 1966, we just missed getting to look into some Waen Las workings thanks to the forestry doing a buldozing job accross the open workings in the Big Covert.
The main thing of note in the Waen Las Bach was a small dam providing the water supply for Pentre Cerrig Mawr House. The workings where limited and not very deep.

There are two ways into the Drainage level near to the side of the river Alun, the one to the south is the best way. Map ref: SJ193607 near to the weir marked on the os map.

Thanks Phil (again) & Graigfawr, I'll look into contacting CPAT.
I managed to get in touch with Cris Ebbs who gives a similar grid reference as well noting a second collapsed adit 50yds upstream. That's the next few weekends sorted then.

I explored this level in early 1970s and took photos of the formations on the wooden props. Will try to locate them.

I remember the stalactites were impressive considering the short time they had to grow.

But I recall also that there was a strong flow of (very cold) water in the adit which we crawled through to gain access to the workings and the keystones in the stone arched tunnel looked a bit loose!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
