We noticed, on our trip to Bwlch Y Plwm the other night, that there may be a couple of discrepancies on the survey drawings. Nothing major and unlikely to cause any major problems, but worth noting if anyone is paying a visit for the first time, particularly if intending to do a through trip from Level 2 to Level 4.
1. 8m shaft from Level 2 to Level 3. This would appear to be a bit more than 8m. Estimated at 10-12m
2. 30m shaft from Level 3 to Level 4. This would appear to be a bit more than 30m. Even harder to estimate, but we reckoned approx 35m.
Why might this matter? If, as we did, you do this trip as a "pull-through" you may look at the survey, as we did, notice the longest pitch is 30m and decide "30+30=60, add a bit for luck....we'll take a 65m rope". No problem on the first pitch. Come to the second pitch and it is short, not by much but by enough to be a problem. Obviously we had another rope so no problem and most other groups will also be well enough equipped to deal with it, however I thought it worth a mention.
Again, these are only estimates, so no offence intended to the original surveyors. :flowers: :flowers:
If you want to do it as a "one-way pull-through trip" with a single rope then it needs to be minimum 75m although I would assume that most groups would have at least one back up plan as there are also plenty of other things that could go wrong. 🙂
