We noticed, on our trip to Bwlch Y Plwm the other night, that there may be a couple of discrepancies on the survey drawings. Nothing major and unlikely to cause any major problems, but worth noting if anyone is paying a visit for the first time, particularly if intending to do a through trip from Level 2 to Level 4.

1. 8m shaft from Level 2 to Level 3. This would appear to be a bit more than 8m. Estimated at 10-12m
2. 30m shaft from Level 3 to Level 4. This would appear to be a bit more than 30m. Even harder to estimate, but we reckoned approx 35m.

Why might this matter? If, as we did, you do this trip as a "pull-through" you may look at the survey, as we did, notice the longest pitch is 30m and decide "30+30=60, add a bit for luck....we'll take a 65m rope". No problem on the first pitch. Come to the second pitch and it is short, not by much but by enough to be a problem. Obviously we had another rope so no problem and most other groups will also be well enough equipped to deal with it, however I thought it worth a mention.
Again, these are only estimates, so no offence intended to the original surveyors. :flowers: :flowers:
If you want to do it as a "one-way pull-through trip" with a single rope then it needs to be minimum 75m although I would assume that most groups would have at least one back up plan as there are also plenty of other things that could go wrong. 🙂

Hey

Pleased i came across this thread via Google. The main objective was to search for a trip report on Bwlch Y Plwm but the internet seems to lack the information i want.

Sound as if you have recently done the trip so hope i can pick your brains?

Looking on a round trip taking in the traverse and the 30(?)m pitch. Maybe a visit to the Roman vein too Any suggestions on the best start point and if the Roman vein is do-able.
also i hear storys of this place flooding????

thanks in advance

Bwlch y Plwm is a very straightforward through trip, although be prepared to get wet feet at the bottom.

Have a look at Robin's surveys on this page:

http://www.aditnow.co.uk/mines/Bwlch-y-Plwm-Lead-Mine/

Bwlch y Plwm and Pantywrach are very close to each other. It would be quite feasible to do both in one day.

And then a quick dash through Catherine and Jane Consols to see the flat rods afterwards
my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by

Take note of the ammended rope length requirements (75m) noted in the original post, if you are planning a pull-through trip. It will save you a LONG, STEEP walk to retrieve a rope
