We didn't do the big drop but looked at a couple of the holes higher up the hill, with a short drop down in side the mine to the walled up level.

Nice little trip - and are going back next Thursday to do the 150' one

Will put some photos of the upper levels up tonight 🙂

Nice to meet Neil too, see you next year

Did you have a look at the hole yourself ?

The estimate of 150 feet is purely an estimate based on almost no facts whatsoever .....

Yup, we had a look down it. There was one shiny bolt and hanger and two slightly fuzzy bolts above it. And it look quite a nice clean drop.

I reckon your height estimate is about right given the height above the railway.

But I'd be suprised if it was a straight drop to the bottom without any levels inbetween?

A few piccies from Thursday's visit to Moelwyn. All taken at the lower level (accessible level, there appears to be a flooded winze down to at least one more level) of the upper workings.

Did you hear a thud or a splash at the bottom?

You will be delighted to know ... "a thud", or more particularly - "no splash".

However, there has been a lot of rain recently

Good luck on Thursday

Interesting. What's the extent of the underground workings ?

About 10 years ago I took a couple of young novices from Tanygrisiau on some slate trips. They were keen, and were soon exploring hither an thither by themsleves in the area. They said they had explored a shaft in a 'lead mine' below the Moelwyns (presumably this one), and had got temporarily trapped by a rock fall. I've not been to this site, so am not sure where their 'shaft' was.

Hard to say, but bigger than we thought! I can't find anything in the way of surveys, but it would make an interesting project for someone

😮 Most of what we saw last week seemed very stable, but something to bear in mind

Think I dropped this one I put two spits and hangers and descended it was above the main Moelwyn mine in Ffestiniog.

Could only see one at the "big drop". The one we used last Thursday had two, but it was a short drop, only down from one level to another (with a walled-up adit?). Hard to describe as I'm still not clear on which level is which. I might add it to my list of projects and do a bit of a survey (when I get a couple of days free.... )
If you've done the "big drop" (short adit, goes in about 5m, shaft to the right hand side with a winze timber over it...) please :flowers: don't tell me what's down there as we are doing it tomorrow night 😉
I want it to be a surprise when I find the Lepachauns and the pot of gold.....and the perfectly preserved loco with a rake of loaded up wagons.....and all the other treasures that we are BOUND to discover down there 😉
Come along if you fancy it?

It must of been the short drop with a walled-up adit then if the shaft was immediately after the wall. Thank you very much for the offer would love to come along but i'm a bit too far away at the moment. Hope you have a great trip and find new ground. 🙂 ... or some leprechauns, whichever, both would be quite excellent finds

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
