Hi,

it looks like I may be allowed out to play again in a few weeks. And there are a couple of things I keep trying to find. Both remains of the old Nantlle Tramway.

First is the bridge over the stream at Bontnewydd (small affair - not the one that currently carries the WHR).

Secondly the Coed Helen tunnel - I know it must be near the roundabout south of Tesco/McDnalds on Caernarfon. But have looked a couple of times and never found it.

If anyone knows how to find these, please post in terms that would make sense to a stupid person.

Many thanks, Andy

The Coed Helen tunnel is still there but a bit obscured where it joins the WHR. It's easier to find from the back. Before the road bridge at SH 4818 6163, head into the trees on the right and the portal is at SH 4816 6165.

There also an interesting tunnel at SH 4808 5935 which presumably pre-dates the cutting through which the current WHR takes.

Cheers,

Robin

Mant thanks,

I now realise where I have been going wrong with the Coed Helen tunnels. Since they are from nantlle, I always assumed they approached the current rail track ferom the east.

So have probably wandered along the cycle path right past the mouths while staring at the opposite side of the WHR track.
