The reason I ask is that a shaft has been uncovered on a site survey / land search. If you draw a parallel line with the river Goyt in the direction of Marple bridge, there is a 90' deep air shaft at the rear of NO4 ' The Close, Marple Bridge (between Marple and Compstall) The opening is indicated on this websites map as being near Pear Tree close in Compstall.
The site now known as the 'Close' was formerly old mine workings and was known back then as the Old engine Yard Pit.
We believe it to be a brick lined construction, capped , but rumoured to have been filled in, but as yet with no proof.
