I remember my uncle who lived in Golden Valley taking me one day about 1939 to Britain pit but all I remember is a white tiled pool I often wondered what it was as it seemed a funny place for a swimming pool. After the outbreak of war they made a rifle range and you could often hear the shots being fired. The rail line from the pit went by my uncles place and we had to cross it to get to the wood (behind the Newlands pub) that he looked after as a Gamekeeper. The locals had many a laugh as my uncles best pal who he drank with in The Newlands Pub was the well known local poacher `Bill` but he was too quick for my uncle who was a lot older and he never did catch him.
