Quite rare these days, Mike Moore Books is probably a good place to start though:

http://www.moorebooks.co.uk/  http://www.moorebooks.co.uk/

It's a very good history of Cwmorthin and gives an excellent account of the development of the quarry: what's interesting is that the same problems (usually works in Cwmorthin upsetting the owners of Oakeley) keep arising - and in the end Cwmorthin was bought out by Oakeley, seemingly in order to prevent them from causing any more collapses!

I know it seems a bit obvious but Amazon seem to have a copy.

Edit.
Assuming it's the same book.
The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

One and the same - the ISBN matches the one I have: this is the second edition, published by Adit Publications in 1995. About time for a reprint methinks 😉

As a member of the partnership which re-published the book I regret to advise that a reprint is not immanent since the 1995 edition took about 10 years to sell and it is only in the last couple of years that we have sold the stock. In addition the original auther and the publishers are fully employed on another slate quarry book at the moment. Currently we beleive that there is little pent up demand for Cwmorthin but if there are a lot of people out there who want one please PM me so that we can assess the situation.

Cheers Jon :)

I was aware of the situation but it might well be interesting to see if there is a demand for a re-issue.

Any news when the new book is due? That might perhaps inspire demand for the Cwmorthin book, as the subject matter is not dissimilar.

Could the book be reissued through Lulu?
Been injured while at work and are not to blame?

Get over it.

Yes - easy-peasy IF it already exists as a PDF or Word document. Paper quality is so-so however, unless several hundred are ordered in bulk. The Snailbeach Lead Mine book was published by me via Lulu, and because it was a bulk order, the quality was much better than expected. From having the Word document sent to me and a pile of digital images to be inserted, it was printed and available in a matter of a month or two.

All this is entirely a decision for Graham, however (or the partnership mentioned by JonK). All I say is that it can be done, and possibly quite easily.

However, as Mike Moore once told me, second editions rarely prove too popular as most interested parties in a specialist market already have copies. So if a new edition was put together, sales would not be particularly high, I suspect. That doesn't preclude using Lulu - if anything it makes the option a better choice as it is a highly viable route for small print runs. The quality would not be stunning, but would be acceptable.

I do our A4 WCMS research journal "Cave & Quarry" using Lulu, and easily did so at an acceptable cost for a run of about 130 copies I recall.

It was slow moving but steady - I offered to pay for a print run but was turned down by yourselves

The Rhosydd Book is also sought after

Nice to know people still want this....... for those who already have the second edition, you will be pleased to know most of the features of my "conjectural" plans of early Cwmorthin are borne out by two plans I found buried in the oakeley archives, and which, for some reason, I had never looked at! They show features of the surface workings which disappeared long before the Back Vein incline was constructed. They are BIG however (50ft=1in) and I havn't had time yet to even ink my pencil tracings in, let alone scan them. When I do - you'll be the first to know.

Excellent - I look forward to those!

I suspect that as digital printing gathers pace, it will become easier for some older books to be reissued, potentially with some new material/images etc. as batches which are smaller in number become economically viable.

The experience of 'Underground Reflections' is an interesting one, in that it has proved possible to produce a very limited run - yet still achieve a very high quality.

I half heard on BBC R4 an article about digital printing. From what I did hear, it seems that the concept of buying a freshly printed book on the High Street might be on the horizon. Books are made available in an online database - such as out of print volumes and the like. You go into a bookshop, order it up, they download it, print it out and bind it, and 15 minutes later you walk away with a warm freshly printed book of your choice. Did anyone else hear this programme?

Didn't hear it, but there's a short video snippet about it here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8017845.stm

As a general rule for these books, I would always suggest checking with the specialist book sellers on this site first. If they can't help, try eBay or Google. I found my copy of the Cwmorthin (G Isherwood) book on eBay, my 2nd edition Rhosydd (MJT Lewis & JH Denton) book via the Ffestiniog Railway and a 1st edition copy of the Rhosydd book also on eBay, a bargain at £20.
