Hello, the gilkes turbine will always have a cast number sitting proud on the spiral casing.Once you have it give Gilkes a ring and ask for Wilf Curwen, they keep fantastic records of every machine sold and Wilf will be thrilled to answer your questions.
Do you mind me asking in which area this machine is,hydro power is my business and i have just refurbished a very similar spiral cased francis for the Highlands.I reckon this looks to be one of thier 1920/30 designs.
regards peter.

Can I fully endorse what Trebs said about Gilkes keeping fantastic records. I grew up on a farm that generated electricity on a very similar machine and when we sold it in 1962, we rang them up and they gave us the complete history. A few years ago I was at the Works in Kendal and mentioned the turbine to one of the staff and I was given a full update on when it was and who now owned it. They now trade under the title of Gilbert Gilkes and Gordon.

Incidentally is it a turbine or a Pelton wheel? As a layman, I don't know the difference.
Don't wait for a light to appear at the end of the tunnel, stride down there and light the damn thing yourself

Hello patch ,its definately a spiral cased francis turbine,it works on the twisting reaction of water passing through it rather than the impulse force from a jet as on the pelton. The circle
of links shown are connected to a series of guide vanes that surround the internal runner and control water flow/speed .
Trebs.
