Over the weekend of the 24/25th lots willing volunteers again turned up at Cwmorthin for another bout of work in preserving the place.

This weekends chosen aim was to try and replace broken timbers on the Lake Level adit which collpased two years ago.

After the original collapse access was negotiated with the landowner a gate was installed at his insistance, this gate is substantial should last a good few years. It was designed by people more usually known for removing gates!

Access is still available to all and details are available at www.cwmorthin.co.uk http://www.cwmorthin.co.uk

There is a combination lock fitted, insurance is not required (but it recommended) as Cwmorthin has insurance in place.

In October this year a weekends work was undertaken to sort out drainage in the cut to the portal and remove lots of rubish inside Lake Level, access is now reasonable dry underfoot and more importantly the newly replaced timbers sit in less water, hopefully prolonging their life.

Much work was done this last weekend to tidy up and make the Managers Office more secure and weather tight, hopefully this will slow the vandals down and prevent people using the floor boards to fuel the fireplace. (pictures will follow when available)

The nasty work has been started and many of the broken and rotten timbers cut out and replaced, seriously haevy work which involved jacking and hammering new timbers into place then cutting out the timbers that gave way when the adit collapsed. Lots of volunteers in this one who worked above and beyond the norm in a fairly hazardous enviroment.
Despite frequent slate showers and some ominous grumbling from the slate tip above nobody was injured or even needed an underwear change :)

There is more timbering work to do in Lake Level, the urgent stuff has now been done, but we intend to do some more before winters end (possibly in January but to be confirmed)
Once the main adit is suitably repaired we will underttake timber replacement under the incline further back in Lake Level to protect it for the future. It has not collapsed but the timber is in poor condition.

Thanyou to everybody who has turned up at various times and shared the effort, it is much appreciated.
Hopefully the new timberwork will last a good few years!
