Old newspaper can sometimes be quite fascinating. Although very fragile as an artifact, many specimens exist in various mines. Whilst it is not always possible to read a whole story due to the disintegration of the paper, I remember a couple of examples and one in particular is worth recording here because of its quaint humour. Seen in the crime report section of a Norther Newspaper from the early 1900s :

A gent had entered a public house and clearly in merry spirits had ordered a drink for everyone in the pub. He then ordered a very large cigar for himself. After the drinks were drunk and the cigar was smoked, he announced to the publican that he had no money whatsoever with which to pay !
Eventually the case came to trial and he found himself before the judge. Apparently he was let off for the drinks, but was sentenced to two weeks in the cells for the cigar !

Down in one of the cabans (the floor below the tanks, I can't remember), there's the fading print from newspapers that were attached to the wall. They seemed to be following the news from the River Plate (Graf Spee 1939). Does anyone know what I'm talking about or have I imagined it.....

You didn't imagine it :)

Here's the caban in question:

And a snippet of the news print (not the Graff Spee section though).

The wall also has various Caws Cambria cheese labels stuck to it 🙂

Replying to my own posts here - a sure sign of senility...

It's G floor Cwmorthin, chamber 35, just off the chamber 34 incline.

Easiest way of including an image in a forum posting is to look underneat the image when viewing it at the medium size, you'll see a block that says:

Link to photograph

To display this in a forum posting please use the code below:

http://www.aditnow.co.uk/showimage?f=/community/Bowydd-10-06-2007-Image-015/

(I've modified that last line so it shows the actual line and not the image, copy and paste that into your forum posting and hey presto, the image shows, like this:

You were spot on - it is just below and 1 chamber west of the boilers and the Graff Spee article is indeed on the wall (for some reason I took a photo of the other article)
