Old newspaper can sometimes be quite fascinating. Although very fragile as an artifact, many specimens exist in various mines. Whilst it is not always possible to read a whole story due to the disintegration of the paper, I remember a couple of examples and one in particular is worth recording here because of its quaint humour. Seen in the crime report section of a Norther Newspaper from the early 1900s :
A gent had entered a public house and clearly in merry spirits had ordered a drink for everyone in the pub. He then ordered a very large cigar for himself. After the drinks were drunk and the cigar was smoked, he announced to the publican that he had no money whatsoever with which to pay !
Eventually the case came to trial and he found himself before the judge. Apparently he was let off for the drinks, but was sentenced to two weeks in the cells for the cigar !
