It might be of use as happens. But not in the way you thought: I might be after some slate floor tiles for the hall shortly... 😉

I got a quote from Greeves for 30cm x 30cm by 12mm slabs, "riven" (IE not polished or blistered) and they wanted 45 quid s/m. McAlps, who we went to next, offered the same product for 20 quid s/m. I thought it odd how two competing quarries selling the same stuff next door to each other can be so different on price. Suppose it depends how the rocks coming out, how much there is etc etc

mcalpines mass produce! Greaves dont! As you said, it all depends on overheads and methods of extraction etc!

I wonder who has bigger supplies... Greaves or McAlpines (not including Penyrosydd and Penrhyn)

How are we all?!

I was wandering how long it would take for photos of the arch to appear on here when I (yes, it was I!) uncovered it on Tuesday, 5th june!

Surprised it took us as long as a week 😉

Mind you, you can't see it really without actually entering the pit. That's a lot of muck you're moving, nice to see a bit of the tuxford. amazing it's remained open down there under all the rubble for so long.

Yeah. Last time I was in there huge (and I mean huge) chunks of roof were coming down every few minutes. Most un-nerving. Would not reccomend anyone goes near it for some time...

On the topic has anyone any idea on how much reserves McAlpines have at Penrhyn?

I've posted some of my 1981 photos of the open workings and Tuxford to the Foty album, and also some ancient stuff to the Foty Archive album. Hope they're of interest.

Yes, we are working the pillars in order to produce roofing slates, tiles and slab-scants.

Showing my ignorance here - what are Slab-scants please DylanW?

I think they're sawn slabs used as sills, coping, hearths and so on.

Lovely pictures, Graham, thank you: it's quite staggering how much everything has changed.

And for comparison, Grahami's 1982 picture:

I can't quite tell what the hole that has appeared at the right might be - the top of a chamber?

It looks like there is still some remains of the path to Cooke's level (far right), but I doubt it'll be much longer until it's reached.

I've annotated this shot to try and explain!

The snag is relating this to the 2008 shot - I suspect the hole Vanoord is asking about is the top of chamber 4 Old vein - but it could be 5 - it depends on how far to the east that rockface has been cut back. Cookes level over the top of chamber 4 was supported by a built up slab wall! In 1981 you could look down into chamber 4 and chamber 5 from the level.

Thanks Graham - I'd say it's Chamber 5: iirc the telegraph pole is in Ch.3, the Old Robey and I think I can just make out the pole in the second right of the Old Vein chambers.

Thus Ch.4 would be the one that looks as if the hard between the Old Vein and New Vein has collapsed.

Because this picture was taken with a huge zoom (200mm equivalent I think), the opening looks as if it's a similar distance away whereas instead it's probably 30-40m closer to the camera, hence the vertical offset.

Given the amount of overburden that exists at that side, I wonder what Greaves will do next? There seems to be the start of a roadway coming down over the top of Ch.3 & Ch.4?

Yes, staring at the old rock formations, greenery etc. just below Cooke's level on your and my shots, I agree - the opening is into No.5 Old Vein. Twiddling the gamma on your shot shows the power pole in Ch3, the narrower one "next" to the cliff is Ch. 4 Old Vein. The New Vein is hidden just behind the edge of the trackway.

This plan may help - or possibly give you a headache. Each vein is shown as a different colour. It's not been properly tidied up yet, but may be of interest. Further explanations (if required) will have to wait - I'm off home!

Cheers
