This is referred to in the catalogue of Woodwards' mineral collection at Cambridge University (1729): "gold ore from the Gold-Mine of Mr. Forteskue, at Copple-Tor, Devonshire"
Has anyone found any other references to this? It would be the later West Wheal Maria/Maria and Fortescue, immediately west of DGC.

Nope.

I wonder if this was the source for the gold allegedly being processed by the Simms brothers at Slimeford?

No mention of gold in that area in Simon Camm's Gold in the Counties of Cornwall & Devon.

The source of Sims' "gold" at Slimeford was manganese - Chillaton and Hogstor for a while were amongst the most profitable mines in Britain. Not sure if the ore actually contained any real gold, probably not.

I found a reference to gold mining at slime ford veor a while back,

I will have a look through my notes at some point and see what I have written about it.

I believe it was a process they came up with to extract gold from manganese or something similar? They were buying ore from other mines convincing people to invest thinking they had mined it all.

All in all a big con.... it was such a long time ago and I didnt really pay much attention as it didn't interest me at the time

There were a number of manganese workings in that district at that time mostly small concerns, but chillaton and hogstor was probably the richest and the most well known. The ore was almost entirely pyrolusite with psilomelane and wad. Its unlikely that gold was associated with this ore.;)

Nothing in Andrew Tindle's masterwork either

Maybe Arthur Kingsbury invented a time machine in his free time....;D
