Hi. Could anyone point me in the direction of the adit entrance to Gwynfynydd. I've been some years ago but I can only find the one directly above the main entrance. The fenced off "dodgy" ladder adit has eluded me.. Last time I reccied it there was a bit of paddle involvement. Cheers. Lazyjase...

Hello and welcome to the forum. Unfortunately you're unlikely to get an answer as it's not a site that anyone is encouraged to enter.
We're not being unfriendly, and there are plenty of other interesting mines in North Wales with less restrictive access.

Lot of ochre in there - you don't want to go stirring that up!

I've been in a few locally. Bwlch Mawr Manganese mine. Wrysgan and waded through Bwlch y Plwmb etc and was looking for something more. Never done rope work though although it's not off the agenda..
Any thoughts.

Plenty of other places that you can explore with and without rope work.
Cambrian mines trust have access into a number of mines including some of the best.

To be honest the Gold mines are nothing special really just like many other Copper Lead mines

Nothing like the Hollywood depiction!

Couldn't agree more. Oddly enjoy the feel of history rather than the thrill, although that helps..

Reckon I'd have more chance of retiring on the Rocking Horse poo I haven't found than finding any gold.

By the way; anyone in my area that's going anywhere "down under" at some time in the not to distant??

Tend to agree. The Old Men left little on show, just as pound coins left on a pavement don't stay there long.

Clogau is interesting though from a geological perspective since the Tyn Y Cornel cross-cut offers a splendid section through the Gamlan to Maentwrog formations, recording the changing environment at the time. You'd need to talk to the folk who are called Gold Mines of Wales to get a look, I suppose. Haven't been in for over a decade but I doubt much has changed. Last time I walked past, February 2016, the mine yard itself was "rewilding".

If you want to go and see the mine, go and see it. Don't let people tell you you can't. It will probably cause some kind of **** and **** a whole lot of people off if you're caught. Take heed of the comments on here (mainly about stirring up the ochre, as in turn, this turns the river orange notifying all the keen eyes that someone is in the mine)

Interestingly, visit the Clogau Gold website. it has taken less than a year between them buying the mine and portraying that the Gwynfynydd site is part of their heritage. They have worded it carefully presumably to comply with advertising regulations, but for people who don't know the history, it would be interpreted as they hav:thumbup:e always owned the site and that's where the gold they use comes from 😉

Hi Lazyjason, if you're interested in trips in general- have a look at our events page, some may need a bit of travel, but there's a few more local-ish for you.

Clogau purchased it about two (certainly not more than three) years ago.

The jewelry they produce contains "a touch of Welsh Gold" (their words not mine) I understand that "touch" is all from Clogau mined many years ago.

The current Mine manager who is employed by the current owners travels around the site and local roads on a daily basis, if he spots you he claims to have reported you to the police and environment agency has you are trespassing and polluting the water ways with ochre.

For the time being it's best to avoid the place, there have also been rumors that there are new owners who intend on reopening the place.

Is he the guy with the red pick-up? I was at West Cwmheisian yesterday taking a few photos and he was eyeballing me as he drove slowly up the mine-road on the opposite side of the Mawddach!

Yes that's him he also looks after the cottage near to the mine as they rent it out to holiday folk so he is up there most of the time.
