It depends what you want out of exploration. There are several groups with focus on different things and different groups of people running around. Some are members of more than one group. There is lots of politics and some people take it very very seriously.

SE Cornwall.

1. PCG. (Plymouth caving group, very serious and proper group who are lawful exact, safe, dilligent, meticulous)

2. Caradon Kev and Associates. This is not a law firm, this is Caradon Kev and some mates who know lots of landowners, like a pint or 6 and are all over the place being genuinely good blokes. You need to chase him via the internet.

3. St Austell Lot. Young conservatives, dodgy mineral collectors meet genuinely good blokes. They are a sort of subdivision of "the carbis bay crew" see below. They mix quite widely.

Central and West Cornwall.

4. Dodgy mineral collectors. There are plenty of these kicking around and they are generally quite difficult to get hold of.

5. Cornwall Mine Explorer's Club. Good bunch of blokes, many of them were "Old Mine Rescue" and there is a load of politics with the "New Mine Rescue". Good blokes, probably the best knowledgeable lot in Cornwall (about mining, geology, history) just don't mention rescue.

6. Carbis Bay Crew. Not a club, google them. Good bunch of blokes, quite a lot of cliff hangers and rope access specialists, as well as some proper explorers. Some of them are "New Mine Rescue", same applies to 5. Mention old rescue and some people start twitching.

7. St Just Mines Research Group. Like the Plymouth Caving Group, but Penwith. I gather they have a metallurgy twist and are quite an interesting lot.

8. Everyone else. Mineral collectors, doggers, murderers and general misfits that groups don't tolerate (or people who choose to stay out of the empire building/rescue debate).

If you plan to get into this seriously, it is best to start in one of the proper clubs so you get a real hang of safety. Quite a lot of the people kicking around out of clubs are dangerous nutters.

There is a shallow level in the Harriet section. It's written about in the report on shaft capping by the CAU. I don't have any idea what it was for, there are waterwheels in the area, perhaps it was a leat for one of those....but why run it so close to the surface....drilling costing what it cost?
