I done my training at Britannia in the 70's and in later years was sent there on various courses while working at Bedwas.
As Britannia was a training pit I am surprised to see no one has added any information?

I did my training there in August 1977, at that time both pits were winding coal. Training was in the North (upcast pit). When I went back to do my face training around 1979 I think only the South (downcast) pit was winding coal. A link had been driven between the pit workings as a fault ran between both shafts. The North shaft wa a fast smooth ride, whereas the South shaft was fast and bumpy due to it being on guide rails as opposed to guide ropes - which the North shaft had.

Strange it's not on the website as it was the first all electric pit in South Wales (I seem to remember reading this somewhere) it also never used pit ponies, but this was more due to it being opened during WW1 and a shortage of horses due to the war.

when I was there S4C were filming as we walked from cage to lamproom, some art documentary I think which was shown on TV for all of a few seconds.

I think one face was called S? all props & bars and from memory I think around 3'-4'

I can see the problem you have listed Britannia as Pengam colliery. There was a Pengam house coal pit lower down the valley at around :
51.6694652202278,-3.2213966050942

It closed as a production unit in 1956 but was maintained for pumping. Anyone who went to Britannia would have heard of Pengam pumps I think there was a connection from one of the landings in one of the Britannia shafts. Hope this is of some help.

When Nomad mentioned Britannia as a training Pit,i took a look at Abernant,the first of the 3 listed, SN near Pontardawe,Swansea Valley,the Red marker is up in mid Wales

Delete this after you alter the position.

Sorry I got comfused here...

So it would be correct to keep the instance of Britannia Colliery I added and rename Pengam Colliery to Pengam House Coal Pit and change its location to the one miner1985 gave?

Just to put you out of your misery Simon. The current posting for Britannia colliery - pictures and location are correct.
The current location of Pengam House coal is also correct. The picture showing the dram on the creeper at Pengam is an underground shot at Britannia so is listed under the wrong colliery (you will have to decide about the headgear shot listed under Pengam - it depends which side of the valley the shot was taken from).

linked to the Welshcoalmines site (third photo on the page - under GWENT and PENGAM) it shows how close Pengam and Britannia were (note headgears are in opposite directions).

You also have a page for a Brittannia colliery (this is the same as Britannia colliery. We always used only the one t.
