Ok guys, I need a couple of volunteers or so from the local crew to help me cap a shaft, the timbers are on site, there are just a bit to heavy for me to carry alone but no problem with a couple of volunteers, this is not a permanent cap as a couple of the timbers will be removeable.
Note: Rope and harness will be required for site safety.
I can bring plenty of tea and biscuits and will be doing some of the grunting.

Can any one help?

Hi tomh, yes the very one, the timbers are about 100 yards away but I can get then to within 50 ft of the shaft collar in the Landrover.

When.....It's the herd factor and the weather, no point if it is raining.

The concrete covers are ok. The slate cover is ok.

The two timber beams which are underneath and support the said covers are in an unceratain state, it's the beams that I am concerned about.

That aside the slate cover slab is fine, but, it is not thick slate, I think it's only just over an inch thick, I would not like to stand on it.

The timbers I have on site are tanalised 6" x 6" and are around 2.1 meters long, I want to put these over and across the existing shaft cover arrangement.

The other shafts for the mine are all fenced off, this was done before I aquired the site by the previous owner.

The shaft in question though has never been fenced, I am not sure who is legaly responsible for doing that, it's a bit of a gray area even though it is on my land, so to play safe I want to make it safe, this will not affect future access to descend the shaft.

No problem Lozz,

Let me know when you have a day in mind and I will rally what troops I can.

Perhaps we could drop it again whilst on site?

Thanks.
You can drop the shaft anytime.
As regards a day I am guessing that a non work day would be best for you guys?
The weather is dry at the moment but not sure how long for?

Ok guys, I am also liasing with tomh, as he knows quite a few of you that I have not met, as he says it's like herding cats, I dare say we will find a common denominator though and then we can all meet up, if anyone wants to drop the shaft then that's fine so long as you have the correct gear etc to do so, if dropping the shaft you will need wellies, if not then you won't as the surface of the site is pretty dry, if you drop the shaft but intend to come out via the portal then I would recomend knee pads, you will get wet legs if not waterproofed upto the waist if exiting via the portal.
Usual site and u/g rules apply, last time someone was in there wasn't that long ago, I was told that the air down there was ok at that time, situations can change as you probably know so be aware.
The threat of heavy rain would make it a no no for underground due to the layout of the place.

Thanks Stuey, shouldn't be a problem.
Re: my request, I am being contacted by a few people that I don't know as regards wanting to come along, I am taking a neutral stance on these at the moment because I don't want hoards tramping around the site, the site as you probably gather is under my ownership, most explorers are fine but there will always be one arse or thunder gob that can spoil things, I have met Toms gang and they were ok, I have never met you but Tom knows you so that's good enough for me.

Lozz.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
