Has anybody come across a ladder pit ?
the one i have found is a brick lined shaft about 7 foot diameter complete with iron ladder bolted to the wall
it looks in very good condition but it seems to have a top blockage about 15 foot down
this might just be resting on the first trap landing
i have seen a scetch of this type of pit but they say it was mostly used in scotland the one i am reffering to is in lancashire it al;so has an old electric supply fixed to the wall so it is hard to estimate the age
i have read that there were some ladder pits in worsley which is a few miles away but other than that i cant seem to find anything !

The same things as Staple Shafts maybe? Short communications shafts into workings either from surface or between seams though they could also be used for pumping in addition. There are a couple in Cleveland that I know of without thinking too hard - Carling How and Tocketts spring to mind - but there may have been more.

sorry no photo's !
this shaft appears on the 1850 map of the area
with another shaft about 200yds away which is capped with a (Brick coal bunker )type set up four walls and a four inch thick concrete lid as is the first shaft, the difference is the first shaft has a little door frame approx 3ft x 2ft on the side, the door has been missing for 25 years that i know of and i have never thought of this as a shaft until i saw it on the old map
The area is heavily mined with several larger shafts in the surrounding area !

you will proberly find that these shafts will have been for pumping, the concrete houses over them and the ladderway/power cables seem to point that way, mining stopped there a long time ago however without checking im sure i remember mosley common maintained pumping in a few old pits to keep their workings dry.
be carefull though it seems blocked part way down because its likely been backfilled and has slumped over time.
geoffrey hays did an exellant book on manchester pits,if you know the area we might be able to give the pits name theres quite a few on here that are very clued up on machester pits.
