My first post, so please treat me gently! I live in Lanner and daily I gaze across the valley to the Tresavean site, now overgrown and almost unrecognisable.
Where can i look to find maps or plans of the site in its heyday so I can make some sense of the mess I can see from my back window? I have read the excellent and large book on Lanner and its Mines by a woman whose name escapes me (excellent read, and learned so much about my own property BTW!), and have had a trawl through the library but can't find anything specific enough to satisfy my curiosity.
I'm sure the assembled knowledge-base will be able to answer my query in double-quick time ("butter 'em up and they'll do anything for you" - my Dad!)

The author you refer too is Sharron Schwartz and you're right it is a monumental work on such a small place. Your best bet for maps is the Cornwall centre Redruth for and the record office at Truro for plans. Tresavean is another site buggered up by a local authority!

Cornwall Studies Centre has some interesting things on the capping of the shafts on Tresavean.

Tresavean is very very interesting indeed.

The shaft behind the power station next to the big pond is West Engine Shaft aka Williams. On the plan you might confuse it with Old Williams, which it is not!

Andy, I too am in your neck of the woods on the Tresavean side. Take a look at these pics of the mine in 1926.

A damned good read, especially if you know the place, and a good historical document.
One of the curiosities of this mine that seems to have gone unrecorded by many, is the fact that they installed gas lighting ( 😮 ) in the shaft to supply light to the stations. It was apparently unsuccessful and the plant was sold to Boscaswell Downs mine, St Just, (I hope I got that right from memory) where they managed to get the system to work.
It also has the honour of being the second deepest mine in Cornwall beating East Pool By only a smidgen.

This is the longitudinal section that pops up just about everywhere Tresavean is mentioned. A cross section would be interesting as most of the stoping is vertical, and would probably resemble Dolcoath.

The gas plant at Tresavean was a success and was moved to Balleswidden mine when Tresavean closed. It was installed (Ithink) in 1861 and carried down to the 160 and was regarded cheaper than candles. The miners had the cost of the gas deducted from their wages.

Hi all
I know it's been two years since I last posted, and I have a supplementary query about the Tresavean area.
I have an idea of putting together a package of guided walks around Cornwall (I am a keen walker with a passionate interest about the area and its industries).
Naturally I want to make sure I am as clued-up as possible about the areas I plan, and want to learn more 'on the ground' too.
Is there anyone local who might agree to meeting me up on the Tresavean site for an hour to walk me around and fill in some detail, including showing me any remains I might have neglected to spot on my wanderings?
I would me so grateful, and there might be the chance to repair to the Coppice, newly taken over by Keltek brewery incidentally, for some liquid refreshment afterwards!
If you think you might be able to help me, please feel free to PM me and we'll see if we can hook up. I'm a teacher, and on Easter holidays at the moment, so the next 10 days would be easy for me either daytime or evenings.

to see what you can download as a PDF file. For many areas they have 25"/mile maps from about 1890, plus many more scales and dates.
The downloadable A3 size option is the best way of obtaining them.

If you don't have an A3 printer, many photo manipulation programs (e.g. Photoshop) will open the PDF files and save them as JPEGs for easier manipulation and printing.

(Usual disclaimer about no connections other than a satisfied customer.)

Thanks Scooptram, I've read that elsewhere too. I really can't believe that the 2nd deepest and most profitable mine in the county is so badly preserved. I guess that's the County Council to blame for that, then!

Is the concrete all just buried or was it destroyed?
Somewhere I have details of a start of a proper measured plan of the mill remains, but it was probably only 30% complete when the site was lost.
