Calling the product marble is incorrect. It is not marble which is a metamorphosed limestone.
The correct name is Purbeck Marble which is highly fossiliferous limestone of unusual hardness and takes polish like marble. In the UK it seems that any stone that will take a polish is referred to by quarrymen as "marble".
I know the owner of this quarry. He is writing, somewhat slowly I fear, a history of quarrying and mining on the Isle of Purbeck.
The quarry has been in his family for several generations. i have seen a receipt for \Purbeck Marble supplied to Wells Cathedral by his Great, great, great, great Grandfather. I think that's the right number of greats!
Nearby is a pub that visitors to area should visit. "The Square and Compass" at Worth Mattravers. That's been in the same family for over 300 years!
