It's a total mystery of how the shafts are capped/filled.

I gather that the shafts in the caradon area were often excavated down to hard rock rather than collars being built. It appears to me that these craters, despite some superficial rubbish are pretty much intact. The tips are intact enough to suggest that the shafts were not filled. I wonder if they used massive granite lintles and then backfilled with the odd junk lying around.

I think Jopes lode which goes all the way through to Kitto's shaft albeit in a waggly manner is buried for good. I haven't been able to find anyone who can comment on anything different in the last 40 years.

When was Jope's shaft filled/capped? I know it was open in the 60's.

I've heard the adit was open as well. Jope's shaft is very close to a major fluccan, so, it's quite possible it was all run in and unimpressive. As you walk up the track, there is a crack/hole in the high side of the track, about 4ft above the level of the track which has water coming out of it. In my estimation, this would perhaps indicate something to do with a blockage in the adit.

Jopes was deep and if I remember rightly, was also a fair sized shaft, since the wall is intact, it's unlikely there was anything big bulldozed into it. Probably concrete sollars or similar.....why they would have capped it when there was a perfectly good wall around it, I have no idea. If I also remember rightly, it's in the wrong place for a farmers bin.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
