Hi all

Hoping someone can help me, trying to find out info about a few shafts in the vicinity of Perranporth School... Some maps I've seen show a 'Painters Shaft' with another unmarked shaft to the east...does anyone know anything more about them?

Are they part of the Wheal Leisure workings as I suspect? Does anyone know if anything is still open? (Painters Shaft has clearly been built over) Depth etc? Any information much appreciated-can't find anything in the Atkinsons' guides...

Thanks

J

I have a feeling that the whole lot is capped/plugged.

There may be a shaft in a hedge, but I haven't looked at it yet.

I gather the adit is well and truly blocked as well.

Yarp, adit is blocked. No open shafts to my knowledge.

There is an interesting article on here about Wheal Droskyn and Ramoth tin mines, regarding their potential reworking. Leisure is mentioned in there.

Comparing the 6" maps to google earth, it looks like there are 3 shafts open in the area. The main workings were totally obliterated and have been for a very very long time.

I'll sling something together when I have time.

Hello J, During the summer of 1992 I camped at Perranporth. I noticed a hole in the cliff face at Droskyn head. A friend and I entered by climbing the cliff and over a wooden barrier with a big red sign saying danger. I was incredibly naive and stupid and proceeded to explore with a small torch. A roughly shaped tunnel approximately 2 metres wide lay ahead. After a short distance, to the left was a round shaft about 6 metres in diameter. It rose to the cliff top where it was capped with railway sleepers, grass was growing through. It dropped about 8-10 meters to a water surface. A short distance further on and blocking the main passage was a similar shaft. However, to one side was a concrete ledge less than 0.5 metres wide, leading to a well defined passage that was less than 1.5 metres high by less than a metre wide. I enthusiastically followed this in a crouch, my friend holding my hand crouching behind me. After several metres, I felt a gust of wind and a six sense told me to stop walking. My eyes grew accustomed to the darkness, and I found my toes were over the edge of a large rectangular shaft. It was at least 6 metres by 8 metres. Again it rose to the cliff top and was capped by railway sleepers. I lay down and shone the torch down the shaft. There was no noticeable bottom. Approximately 100 metres down was a wooden shaft attached to the wall, apparently the remains of a man engine. I found a large stone and dropped it, it eventually 'flew' into the wall and bounced all the way to the bottom. I hope this is of some interest to you. My blood is running cold writing this and I realise that I had a very lucky escape.

Hi Terry
What you post is of immense interest and I would like to try and locate your level next time down, so any guidance to exact location would be welcome.
The level of small dimensions is of interest as it sounds like a 'coffin level' which was a level driven without explosives of the smallest dimensions that could accomodate a human body. There is a lot of interest lately in the Welsh Mines Society about '3 foot levels', I am currently trying to get into the inner reaches of Goginan mine nr Aberystwyth where such a level has been described
My avatar is a poor likeness.

It sounds like Wheal Droskyn to me, right under the sundially thing. I haven't been in there, but I know someone who has!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
