Looking at all the tree shelters in the background, I suspect I see a planting scheme that is "going off the rails".
Nice pictures, thanks Carnkie.

Excuse my ignorance Gwyn but can you explain 'tree shelters'. I confess I hadn't looked too closely at that section of the photo. At least they hide you no what. ๐Ÿ™‚ I know, I haven't got round to it yet.
The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

Tree shelters are open ended tubes that are placed over newly planted tree, sometimes natural regeneration or directly sown tree seed. Developed by Tuley while working for the Forestry Commission, Alice Holt, early field results lead to manufacturers producing vast numbers in a bewildering range of sizes, colours, types etc. A shelter can confer a number of protective functions as well as increasing establishment %'s. They can also accelerate the height growth of the young tree, at least until emergence from the top.
I spent much of my professional life carrying out research into their use and the effects they have on the young trees.

I assume they are there to stabilise the waste tips around the pit and when bigger they might help reduce wind blown dust.
But if anyone is interested I can speak to the Environmental section and see what is going on there.

Is it safe to come out of the bunker yet?
