The photo below shows the late Dave Smith working on a dig in Wheal Gorland in 1991. The tool he is reaching for we used to know a s a Pelican. This one was 'liberated' from Wheal Jane where Dave was a shift boss.
Question; Where can I buy one of these things? they are an amazingly efficient digging tool and nothing else I've used comes close.

Morning RoyM
I use a trenching tool, I think its the 'German' model with a wooden handle, can be used with blade straight out, or at 90 degrees. They are about a fiver at surplus stores.
The 'American' all steel model is junk, it rusts away in no time, the locking threads go, they are scrap when new.

I have never seen the exact model illustrated, but it looks good. Google returned 2 hits, they seem to be made in Canada, but I doubt a UK stockist. You could always mail order from Canada or US, you should find a stockist on the Internet.
My avatar is a poor likeness.

You should be able to get a similar tool from your local farm supplies, albeit the handle is longer, which can be cut down or left as is. We use one in Longrake they make brilliant tools for digging collapses.
The management thanks you for your co operation.

I've got several "ends" kicking around if you can be arsed to "handle" them. They will require digging out though.

That's similar to the tool Hymac bought along to the Cwmorthin Smoke Flue dig day. It was hugely effective for shifting rocks and mud from the outflow.

I've got an old ironmongery book which has an exhaustive list of everything. The closest thing to it is the surprisingly heavy duty "potato hoe".

They aren't listed on ebay and I don't recommend you put the phrase to google images!

More "spoony" varieties of adze seem to be what matey actually has

Just as an addition to my post, the picture doesn't show the whole beast and the blade actually tapers to a point and not a square end like some of the gardening/farming implements.
