I understand that Michells Shaft Engine House will be auctioned 2pm on Wednesday 17th September 2008 at the Penventon Hotel Redruth, Guide price £1000+

The auctioneers are Stratton and Holborow http://www.stratton-holborow.co.uk/

There was a failed attempt to gain planning consent for conversion to a dwelling some years ago and there is a clawback clause should planning consent be gained within 10 years of this sale.

Very interesting indeed. I went and had a look and the house appears to have a mount for a flywheel, suggesting either a whim or some sort of multipurpose engine. The HJ map says there is a shaft right under the end of the flywheel pit. I wonder if there was a conrod which affected the pump rods. There is a also a strange shaped pit next to the flywheel pit, which doesn't look like a pit below the bobbin, but more like an odd set of stamps.

If that goes for £10000, let alone £1000, I would be very surprised!!!!

Reminds me of that £5000 house in Redruth.......

Interesting why it isn't just a straight pumping engine. I assume the pumping engine house was "Trencrom mine" and the whim was at Hollow Shaft (engine house a fair bit away) and mitchells was the stamps (last working). Whether or not they capped the shaft to use the engine house to drive the stamps, there is no record in any of my books.....

Get on my tits when places like this are sold subject to
a clawback provision. In this case for a period of 10 years should planning consent for development be obtained.

Either these people want to sell or they don't unconditionally

Just put in an offer subject to removal of the clawback. It's all open to negotiation.....

The Grade 2 listing is a bit of a grey area. Probably why matey was denied PP. Also, the area is overlooked by what look like "locals houses" and they probably took a dim view of some lunnunner coming down turning the place into a gucci holiday spread.

I'm interested in what the house actually was. Trencrom had 3 engine houses, a pump, stamps and whim. I'm betting that this one was the stamps and originally housed a pump. This follows from HJ maps and the designation (dines) of Mitchell's Shaft. I think that the shaft is under the loading for the flywheel and that is why the bottom of the stonework is visible from the "low" side. This corresponds with where the shaft would go.

Makes me think I should have tied myself off to something when poking around there.

Obviously, the caveat is that there could be a fair old engine shaft under there with a crumbling lid!

I expect that matey will guage the interest (by auction) and then perhaps pull out of the sale like so many ebay yellowbellies.

A friend of mine was at the auction, it went for 15k.
A young cornish couple bought it who wanted to preserve it. The sellers changed the claw back to 20years.

I thought 10 years claw back was greedy - 20 years is obscene! Mind you, that might be grounds for "an unreasonable clause" get out.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
