South croft has donated winder and wire 20mm also the old engineer from concord has been over and confirmed the water is below adit level and is at about 32f which is great news,

there are the old workings at the 15f level and also alot of different things to see

But not been down yet,

The fron of the gear is being removed first, and then the head, been down to levant today and it has been confirmed that was made in 1968 and concord headgear was made in pre 61 so it offically the oldest, tallest and most original wooden headgear remaining AWESOME

We spent saturday attaching the chains to the headgear if anyones intrested (once i can work out how to add pics), not really intrested in whats down the mine my intrests is saving the head frame for generations to come

I'd be extremely interested to see more on how the lift works.

The usual problem with lifting structures of this sort ( they are quite common in the oil industry, pipe ranges, shallow water jackets, drilling derrick sections and so forth ) is that they tend to distort or crush under their own weight, hence the use of various bridles and lifting frames to direct the stresses of lifting into the required plane.

Here's a Consols style section from today's trip. Very rough measurements.

The shaft was 10ft square with a concrete collar for about the first 10ft or so. It was an easy drop in the skiproad with no bad air or obstacles. The North East side of the shaft was for the pitwork (left) and the footway (right) The SW of the shaft was solely for the skip which had been slung down a couple of years ago. The shaft is divided into 2 by a series of 4x10" (approx) timbers which are concreted in and are used to support 2 big iron rails in the skip section and the gubbins for the pipes/footway.

The footway section was horrible and in no way passable at all. The skip had taken out some of the timbers and this in turn had freed parts of the steelwork which lay at precarious angles. We had to move some of it on the way down. About 80ft down, there is a comical part blockage which rests on a 47kg gas cylinder, which appears to be holding everything up by magic. If this is disturbed, a large amount of steelwork will "take out more stuff".

We found the cage under a tyre and a couple of gas cylinders. There was a lot of crap at this level -120ft and we could see water about another 8ft down. We couldn't tell if there was a level. Oddly enough the air was very clear down there which I wasn't expecting with a blind shaft. The only way to tell is to heave out some of the crap.

The cage looked true, but some of the "holey panel" was badly bent. I reckon it came off the guides about 20ft down and went the rest of the way taking off various things.

There was a big air pipe and a bit of cable about as fat as my thumb.

Oddly enough, the steelwork was very corroded, much worse than in Mt Wellington shaft which is still pretty good to go.

The rock was killas and there was no evidence of mineralisation, although there was a patch of black shiny stuff in one of the walls.

Who knows what it's all sat on. I reckon it's probably a mass of timbers caught up on underwater timbers.

Spoke to a guy this eve and he has the original cage signal board anf it says theres a level at 20f which means 120f hmmm intresting

As Stu says, its ~40m down, lots of stuff wedged at the bottom, and the footway is stuffed with occasional magic hanging crap. Nice drop though. Looks to be water just below the blockage although can't be 100%. R.

Nice pictures, although I can't seem to see the right hand side of them.

In the bottom photo, I am stood on the top of the cage.

Levels are often reckoned in fathoms below adit. Bear in mind that the adit has a gradient to make water flow, it will generally be referred to, for instance in Dines as "So and So shaft, adit at X fathoms". So, a 20F level is below adit, which will be so and so from surface. The only way is to clear the crap out of the way, or look at a detailed plan.

I have a feeling there is information on the levels, either on this site, or Mine Explorer.
