I was the surveyor here for some years. It was always a very friendly mine and I enjoyed working there. The headgear I believe came from Wheal Pendarves on the old Tryphena Mine Bennett's shaft. I was for many years also the surveyor for Pendarves. I have forgotten many of the names of the people I worked with at Concord and a lot of mining has passed under the bridge.

the head frame was made by gevor for contact shaft at cligga i think in the 60s when they started looking at the place for reopening it it was then moved to concord where it still stands (just)

It also spent a period of time at Nangiles mine. Shame nothing is being done to protect it, being the oldest and only original wooden headframe left in Cornwall.

Who is occupying the site and who actually owns it are two different things, I gather.

Hey Tashekent Surveyor, you aren't Dave Bendle's Dad by any chance are you?

That is incorrect as far as I know.

The journey of the Wheal Concord headframe was:

Cligga to Nangiles then finally to Wheal Concord.

The headframe that was on Bennet's shaft, Pendarves, was the one that was previously used during prospecting at West Wheal Peevor. There is a large difference in the two, the one on Cligga/Nangiles/Wheal Concord being a more typical medium sized headframe build whilst the one on West Peevor/Pendarves being a more unusual looking small box like headframe.

Yes you are right, I've deleted my post. Just goes to show how ones memory can play tricks, sorry about that

The headframe was in very good condition when it arrived at Concord and only two pieces of timber needed replacing.
This part of a series of pictures I took when it was being taken down in May 1980.

Could you post the rest of the set? I love seeing your photos of the Twelveheads area mines, the more you post the better!

I had a mooch through the archive and dug the rest out. The last one was taken with a crappy old camera that never seemed to focus correctly. I think the pressure plate was a little sticky and didn't always press the film against the frame aperture. All taken in May 1980 the crappy one early January.
Note the Wellington site in the background and how bare it looks.

Excellent pictures! It doesn't matter about the lesser quality one, it's all historic and thats what counts, you don't get the chance to see pictures of places like that much anymore.

Sorry I didn't reply to your PM, I have yet to ask the admin of the site for PM'ing access. Do you have many more pictures of Mount Wellington during it's working days? Those are something few and far between.

Glad you liked the pics. I worked for Sam back in the 70's fitting a new mill in South Crofty. Had some some wild times and late nights in the Sparnon Gate pub where it was strict protocol to visit directly after work. Pints were waiting behind the bar for us to come in, and all on Sam, he was a star and a good engineer, I never once saw him fased by anything. We were knocking off one evening after a particularly hard day and looking forward to a drink. Coats on, Sam and I were locking up when a figure came racing racing accross the yard in the dark shouting Sam! Sam! ( No! not pick up thy musket!) There's been a bit of a mishap in the mill. We trooped down to the concentrator house where some of the guys had been putting in a new platform high in the roof to take a Hydrocyclone. What we saw made Sam laugh out loud, much to the distaste of the manager who was standing there with a look of horror and grave concern on his face. An RSJ about 8 feet long had dropped from the platform and pierced a shaker table and was now being thrown backward and forward at a frightening rate. No one wanted to go near it. Finally we managed to get to the drive mechanism and 'Knock it out of cog' We had to assemble and fit a new table with just man power as we could not get a crane or forklift anywhere near it. It was pretty scary crawling underneath while too few men held up the table for us to get the bolts into the umpteen suspension straps underneath. We finished at about 12.30
that evening and all was back to normal when we left. And the pub had drinks and food all set up. Good old Sam!

His forklift was no better. You could switch it off with the forks high and no load, go for lunch and it would be on the floor when you got back. It was worse with a load

Blimey Roy, I bet the HSE would have had a fit today over just about every bit of your stories..... It was the same on the railway.... We used to do stuff with Jacks and Timbers all by hand and avoid a crane call out as it meant waiting hours.... We had some good gaffers who would have us all out for an Indian and all the ale we could drownin ... happy days!
