Hello welcome to addit now I see this is your first post , just incase have you searched this mine in the search box ? It gives relevant information on books to read also that it’s caped now .so I imagine access is going to be a major issue , or are you looking from historical point of view and not exploring , I would recommend doing lots of research and getting the books but nothing wrong in asking :thumbsup:

Theres never much in the way of 'information' about deneholes/chalk wells as they were dug long ago and were of little to no use once worked out, countless holes have been filled or capped with probably a lot remaining undiscovered, they were apparently given a sort of brick dome capping (where they were capped at all). One of the few accessible (though gated) holes is near Hucking, it was cleared a few years ago by KURG and is about 40 feet deep.

Yes, that's about it.

Perhaps you want to know things like "whose land is it on?"

"How deep is it?"

"Is it still accessible?"

and so on - but I don't have those answers - is that the kind of thing you wanted to know?

Walderslade chalkwell

"This was a perfect draw well with a short neck 3.5m in diameter and 3m long opening out in a circle to a total depth of 13.7m allowing 2.5m for the debris cone. The base diameter was 8.7m and the total displacement of chalk was 520 cubic metres. There was a bench in the wall 1.9m long in the west quarter. It is now covered with a concrete raft."

I think that pretty much sums it up - another boring featureless hole in the Kent chalk.

There were absolutely no legal requirements for farmers to keep records or notify the authorities of chalk wells, being on such a small scale so most would be off the radar of any mining records for a local area.

One was found in Fen Ditton just outside Cambridge a few years back in some fellows back garden, basically a short shaft belled out a bit at the bottom.

Makes me wonder if there are more around here but I've never found any apart from the tunnels behind Balsham sewerage works - there's certainly plenty of chalk about though so quite possibly.

I'm curious as to what site exactly the OP was looking for? The Medway towns area is totally riddled with workings of various sorts in the easy dug chalk. Quarries, wells, cold-storage and the dene-holes (of disputed purposes).

My in-laws are not far from Walderslade and have some sort of capped shaft in their rear garden. Looks to be a well-sized top causing a distinctive mark in the lawn. There's no houses there on the old maps, so I'm curious. I've been forbidden to dig into it!
