I thought that Dropping Well Colliery was just another name for Grange Colliery that is just off Dropping Well Road..But now it appears to be a much earlier colliery ..Thanks for the map - Very useful and the photos that show the spoil related to Coal extraction . Chris:-tel 07748403815

Do you know the area? I lived on Farm View Road from 1965-1979, when I was 16, but it was much more exciting before about 1976, when they began removing all the larger heaps. It would have been a spectacular sight now we know more about the area. The Dropping Well Colliery was owned by George and Henry Duke, a local Kimberworth family, and it seems it was in work when the OS map was created, but there's only shreds of info online, and no photos of the old site that I can find, sadly. I may have to look through some old photos at my parent's to see if can find anything in the background!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
