I remember two shafts each with a brick wall round about three feet in height, both were narrow compared to upper hartshay shafts. one could look down and see the wooden timbers that used to support the slippers. many tools were dropped down these shafts at the end of the shift, the lads said it was better than carting them back to the stores. it was 1948 and it seemed to always be wet and cold. a brisk walk to ripley market place, a hot cup of tea from the mobile shop then the trent bus home.
